Floria Sigismondi Talks 'The Runaways'

Photobucket
With the strange and surreal aesthetic that informed much of Canadian director Floria Sigismondi's name-making early music video work (think Marilyn Manson's "Beautiful People," or David Bowie's "Little Wonder"), it might seem a stretch for her feature directorial debut to be a biopic. The Runaways, released last week on DVD, is the story of the quick formation and dissolution of the '70s all-girl rock band, and in a recent interview with Exclaim!, Sigismondi spoke about her decision to stray from her usual approach and keep it rooted in visual realism.
"My work doesn't necessarily stay in reality, I like to go and make it my own little world," Sigismondi says. "I took license a couple of times in the film to kind of maybe be a little more symbolic, or portray a feeling of loneliness, or like your world is falling apart, but for me, it was important to stay in that real world and tell the story without too many bells and whistles."

Joan Jett & 'Runaways' director Floria Sigismondi talk about Kristen

Photobucket

Rock icon Joan Jett is standing on the film set for The Runaways, a biopic based on the all-girl group she co-founded. With her is actress Kristen Stewart, her mullet-styled hair dyed black and thick dark kohl eyeliner around her eyes. Stewart is listening intently to Jett, who is gesticulating with her hands, as if playing an imaginary guitar.

Director Floria Sigismondi, whose past work includes directing music videos for David Bowie and Sheryl Crow, seems awestruck.

"They're like twins," she says. "I mean, I look over and there they are. It's like one of them is holding up a mirror. I can't get over how much they're alike."

But Stewart didn't turn into Jett overnight. For many months before The Runaways started filming, Jett was helping the 20-year-old star.

Jett tells Metro that Stewart now knows more about her than anyone: "I told her things I've never told anyone before," Jett says in her husky voice.

Along with rare recordings she copied for the star, Jett also duplicated tapes she used to send to her aunt when she was a teenager. Jett felt it would help Stewart get to know who she really was beyond the ''pictures of this girl with black hair and heavy make-up''.

Floria Sigismondi interested in directing Breaking Dawn? (video)

Twilight Lexicon

JJ, Floria, and Michael Shannon Talk About KStew

Joan on first meeting Kristen: I met her last New Years Eve. She came up to see a gig and I kind of just dumped on her about The Runaways for several hours and asked her if she was going to cut her hair. She said yes and I had great faith that she was going to be able to pull this off because she seemed very dedicated and genuine and authentic. We had a few weeks before filming started to spend some time and she picked my brain.

Joan on the process of making the film: Working with the actors was great. They were brilliant. The whole process was brutal, but in general working with the actors was great.

Michael Shannon on working with so many young actresses: Theyre all very nice people and theyre all very nice to me. Theres no tension, really. Everybody was so focused on trying to do a good job, Kristen was constantly with Joan, trying to learn as much as she could and absorb as much as she could from her. Dakota was always practicing her moves and getting inside of Cheries frame of mind. It wasnt a very social kind of thing.

On meeting Kim Fowley with Kristen: My first day of shooting, I hadnt met him yet. We did a scene and at the end of the day Joan and Kristen were like, "You should really meet him; youre playing this guy." I was like, "Yeah, youre right." So they set up a dinner. We had dinner at this Dennys in the Valley and he came with all these pictures and clippings, told me his whole life story in about two hours.

Floria Sigismondi on how Kristen got cast: It started with Art Linson, hed worked with her on Into the Wild, so I saw her in that the short amount of time she was on screen, she was so captivating. Her eyes just tell a lot. And when I think of teenagers, and these girls, too, teenagers dont really sit there and express their feelings and talkits all in the face. I really wanted someone who would emote visually, not talking that much. Shes got that kind of quality. So when I met her, I instantly knew I wanted her for Joan.

Floria on getting the girls ready to rock: We put them through some lessons, but [Kristen] already knew how to play guitar, but really just to have them kind of polish upactually all the girls. And then Dakota, I actually put her in front of a live band to rehearse so she knew what it would feel like to compete against drums and big amps and really loud music.

Floria on Kristens transformation into Joan: I could see her change onstage when she was rehearsing with the girlsfrom the back, her body started to change, really, physically transform. And I think it was because she was standing like Joan does and getting that kind of arch in her shoulders and so that was really interesting to see.

Floria on how Joans presence on set affected Kristen: It gave her a comfort level that if she veered to something wrong, someone would say something. They had a close relationship.

'Runaways' Director: Kristen Stewart's And Dakota Fanning's Make-out 'Will Cause An Explosion'

It's no secret that Kristen Stewart and Joan Jett became really close while the former was filming the latter's biopic, "The Runaways," but it seems like costar Dakota Fanning got pretty tight with the former rock star she was embodying as well: Cherie Currie. Some photos of the two at Cherie's 50th birthday party popped up on her Facebook about a month back, and we've got to agree with one of the comments on it: Cherie easily could have played herself in the film. Fifty years young, lady!
On to some actual news: The Los Angeles Times (who has been giving us plenty of good stuff in the past week, I might add) is running an article in their Sunday edition about "The Runaways," which debuts at Sundance the week after. And yes we do think it's awesome that this article is from the future (yup, it's dated Jan. 17!)

It doesn't contain too much new information about the film, but the LA Times seemed to have gotten pretty up and personal with most of the cast and crew when they did their set visit a couple months back (Kristen and Joan declined to comment for whatever reason). Turns out what we've been referring to as a "biopic" isn't so much a straight history of the evolution of The Runaways, but more a character study of Joan and Cherie's characters.
"It's about 15-year-old rock stars, the rise and fall of kids," producer John Linson said. "We're trying hard not to let that get taken away."
LA Times also asked Dakota the question she seems to be asked every time she doesn't do a movie about sunshine and rainbows: Is this her film to break her out of the "child actress" mold, and her response is brilliant. ""I want to continue to act for my whole life," she said. "Eventually, everyone will have to let me grow up, somehow, some way. I'm just trying to let that happen as naturally as I can."
One of the many things that is sure to cause a stir from the film is the reported make-out scene between Dakota and Kristen. Writer and director Floria Sigismondi said, "In 'Edgeplay' (Cherie's memoir), Cherie mentions that Joan is really good in bed. I thought, 'I have to pry into this a bit. It will cause an explosion in the film. Why not go there?' "
It certainly will cause an explosion for all those used to watching Kristen make-out with her "Twilight Saga" costar, Robert Pattinson. We can only imagine what will happen if she goes farther onscreen with Dakota than her chaste kisses with Edward Cullen. Maybe "The Runaways" is moving up on our list of things to be excited for in 2010 already.
