INTERVIEW Kristen Stewart: 'Playing Bella Is Intense'

How do you maintain the intensity of the relationship onscreen given that the two characters spend so much of the movie apart?

Kristen Stewart: I think to miss something it has to go away. It was easier to play Bella in New Moon because I got the chance to go through the experience of playing Bella in Twilight. I do think the movie stands alone - if it wasnt a sequel, it would still make sense - but I wouldnt have been able to play it because I wouldnt have known how she felt so physically altered (by Edward leaving)... hypothetically, obviously, because I dont know what its like to be in love with a vampire! But its because the descriptions in the book are so visceral, its literally first person narrative so you know how shes feeling all the time. But how did we maintain intensity? The storys intense, its what we were supposed to do.

Have you gotten protective of the character after playing her? Do you put some of your own input into the performances?

KS: No. Everyone knew what they were getting into, and were all still doing the movies for the same reason we started doing it. All we want to do is tell the story, all we want to do is do the books justice.

Have you talked to Stephenie Meyer much about the character?

KS: I talked to Stephenie a lot on Eclipse, for the first time actually. I think thats just because she was on set more. She would visit us occasionally but it was always so quick I never really had time to get into anything. It was so cool because I was always a little bit intimidated by her. Its a similar relationship we have to the fans, but shes the Queen Bee, so it was great to talk to her.

What do you get up to on your down time?

KS: Fairly normal things. I have my family, my friends, my pets. Nothing noteworthy whatsoever.
