New Welcome to The Rileys Review
First thought I had entering this screening: Kristen Stewart was promised for a Q&A, and looking around, I would profile a good half of this crowd as Twi-hards who couldnt care less about a James Gandolfini movie. Second thought: When its announced upfront that there will be no talent appearances, Im amazed more people dont walk out and demand refunds.
Third thought, as movie begins: Dear God, Gandolfinis attempting a Southern accent? This isnt good. And his character lives in Indiana, so why? As it will turn out, the accent comes and goes throughout the movie, and isnt too distracting an issue.
Fourth thought: why does the festival program call this Jake (son of Ridley) Scotts first feature, since hes made two prior, and Im pretty sure PLUNKETT & MACLEANE, which came out a decade ago, was made first.
Fifth thought: this numbering gimmick of mine is getting tiresome, but Im locked into it now, and must fully commit, as they taught me in improv classes. Drat. Maybe should make rest of review one big run-on sentence to keep it at what could technically be considered a sole thought. Okay, so
Sixth thought: Kristen Stewart is a much better actress in this than she was in NEW MOON, and Im not saying that because she plays a scantily clad stripper in high heels, though foot fetishists (which I aint, but Quentin Tarantino and LexG are) will dig that, and maybe shes better at this character because shes a grown up child star, and thats a path fraught with the same kind of potential degradation suffered here, and oh yeah, the plots about Gandolfini as a guy whos teenage daughter is dead, so when he encounters Stewart at a convention in New Orleans, he decides to stick around and be a surrogate father; meanwhile, wife Melissa Leo back in Indiana is an agoraphobe, and Leos physical bits in this are freakin excellent; a scene where she tries to figure out the automated controls in her own car ran very true to me, as Ive only ever driven old-school stick-shift non-electric-everything vehicle since thats what my dad buysalso, this movie was pretty good, and the fact that Leos character was named Lois made me think Gandolfini could star in a live-action FAMILY GUY movie, probably with Leo again.

Why Kristen Stewart connected with 'Rileys' more than 'Twilight'
LA Times:
The day after the mega-premiere of "Twilight: Eclipse" last week, Kristen Stewart was back at the Los Angeles Film Festival on Friday night for a decidedly more low-key event, supporting the film "Welcome to the Rileys" alongside cast members Melissa Leo and James Gandolfini. The film premiered earlier this year at Sundance and was recently picked up by Samuel Goldwyn Films for a planned fall release.
Writer Ken Hixon and producer Michael Costigan -- director Jake Scott was not in attendance -- first fielded a few questions after the screening. It was hard, however, not to feel that much of the room was simply waiting on Stewart, dressed in a short, simple black dress but having traded in the high heels of her arrival photos for a pair of low-top Converse sneakers. The first few rows of the audience seemed to skew more strictly female and decidedly younger than the larger audience, and the constant photo-taking revealed them as likely "Twi-hards."
It can be difficult, amidst the "Twilight" hubbub, to keep in mind that Stewart is a gifted actress and "Welcome to the Rileys" plays first and foremost as an actors' piece, allowing Stewart, Gandolfini and Leo to turn in three layered, deeply felt performances that seem natural and human even as the film's story takes some unlikely turns. Gandolfini plays a Midwestern businessman who goes to New Orleans on a business trip and meets a teenage stripper/prostitute played by Stewart. The two strike up an uneasy alliance; not a romance but maybe not always a pure friendship either, with each looking for something from the other. When Leo arrives, as Gandolfini's wife, the dynamics adjust again.
Rebecca Yeldham, LAFF director, moderated the discussion and first asked Stewart if she consciously chose parts "that couldn't be further from Bella" when taking roles outside the smash supernatural romance series that has made her an international sensation.
"No, it's never been, I've never chosen," Stewart said, beginning one of her notoriously halting, slightly elliptical answers, partly seeming self-aware enough to not want to repeat herself from previous interviews and partly unsure of how to put her thoughts into words, as if her mind were moving much faster than her mouth.
"It's a strange word to say 'chosen,' but I've never chosen anything I wasn't so moved by," she continued. "Liking something, it's a similar feeling to read something, it's such an undeniable emotion, whatever, to feel like you want to live and learn from that. And I had that with this. It really doesn't matter the budget of the movie -- I had that with 'Twilight.' Yeah, so, there you go."
For his part, Gandolfini was thinking somewhat of his most famous role, TV's gangster kingpin Tony Soprano, when he decided on taking his part.
"I wanted to play someone who wasn't killing anyone, for a change," Gandolfini said. "I thought it was different, something I hadn't read before."
With a dry delivery that made it unclear if he was joking, he drew laughs from the audience when he added, "And I'm really miserable, so I can play this miserable man."
Gandolfini and Stewart shared a microphone and the two communicated with a charmingly complex language of finger flicks and eye rolls, as neither looked to want to be the one to hold the mic between answers lest they be the one compelled to talk next.
In a question from the audience, Stewart was asked how she prepared for her "Rileys" role.
"I learned how to dance a bit, which you don't really see in the movie," Stewart said. "It was good for me, to learn from that you get bruises all over your body. It's really tiring. It hurts."
Stewart said she also talked to women at the strip club where parts of the film were shot. "And that was good for me because a lot of people really are dead inside when you look in their eyes, and it was hard for me at the beginning to understand what could push you to lose that. Basically these girls walk around like open wounds, like physically, literally, all the time, all day."
Asked if there was a scene in "Rileys" that was particularly difficult to shoot, Stewart mentioned a scene in which she and Leo discuss a certain female issue -- "the urinary tract infection scene," she called it -- and noted how Leo's off-camera performance during Stewart's close-up was particularly useful.
"She made me feel really, really, really weird," Stewart said, turning to Leo and asking "was it weird for you?" when she asked Stewart if she couldn't urinate.
"I'm somebody's mother, Kristen," Leo said. "It's not funny to ask if you made pee-pee if your pee-pee's feeling bad. That's what you do."
A young woman who said she came from Sweden haltingly asked why Stewart had said in another interview that her character in "Rileys" was the one she connected with the most. "Maybe it just affected me the most. It's hard to say," replied Stewart. "Sometimes you can leave [stuff] at work and sometimes you can't."

ET: Kristen Stewart is Part of the Wolf Pack
ET Online: In 'The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,' mortal Kristen Stewart is torn between the vampires and werewolves. In real life, Kristen dances with wolves at home.
Kristen's family is the proud owners of hybrid wolf-dogs. She told David Letterman on Monday's edition of "The Late Show," "It's my mom's deal. Maybe it was a bit of empty nest syndrome, she needed to raise more children because they really are hard to take care of."
The exotic pets were gotten from a breeder in Florida. Though high-maintenance, Kristen said they are loving animals and showed a picture of her cuddling with one.
With 'Eclipse' about to hit theaters on June 30, Kristen is wrapping up a worldwide promotional tour for the film. During her travels, she was all about Team Jacob, telling Dave, "I was [traveling] with Taylor [Lautner] on this last one because Rob [Pattinson] was working. We were able to have a lot more fun this time." The crowd erupted in laughs, but she covered her tracks by saying they misunderstood her intentions.

Kristen Stewart Talks to Allure About Her New Haircolor
Just when we thought there couldn't be more gorgeous looks from the Twilight bunch, Kristen Stewart goes and lightens her hair--and she talked to me about the change. "I just wanted to keep it natural," she said. The shade is for a role she'll play in a movie based on Jack Kerouac's novel On The Road. "In the book, [the character is] written with blue eyes and blonde ringlets, and I just felt I wanted to keep it natural," she said. "I didn't think that full-on blonde hair would look very natural on me. So I wanted to keep a little bit of brown that I naturally have, and I'm a little bit red, too. I just wanted it lighter." Is she a fan of the novel? "I love it," said Stewart. "It was my first favorite book."
Adir Abergel, stylist and Fekkai celebrity ambasador, who works closely with Stewart, gave more beauty details. "It is something she wanted, but we are also starting to head toward the character." And, as for the style Stewart wore at the Piaget-sponsored Cinema Society screening of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse at The Crosby Street Hotel last night, Abergel explained, "I used some Fekkai Nonchalant, to kind of close the cuticle, and pomade, to give it that great texture. We braided it on the side and put it into a little chignon."
Beau Nelson gave the scoop on her makeup. "Earlier, she was wearing a dark, maybe teal smoky eye. And so I just used a black cream eyeshadow over it to erase the cream from it. Then I put on black powder eyeshadow and burgundy shimmer on top of that." Nelson does makeup for the actress in New York during press tours. "We always try to do something fashion-forward," he said. "Usually, for the end of her tour, she's saved a really amazing dress, so we work with what she's got to wear. She's so comfortable with me, and we have a great time together. We wanted to do something a little bit punk, but elegant. She was really into nude lips, so I used a lip gloss from my line, Beau Beaute, called Medusa."

Moviefone.Com: How 'Eclipse' Turned Me Into a Twi-Hard
Moviefone.Com:
WARNING: POST CONTAINS MAJOR 'ECLIPSE' SPOILERS
Of all the movies to hit theaters this summer, who knew that 'Eclipse,' the third chapter in the ongoing 'Twilight Saga,' would be one of the very best?
Yes, you read that right, and yes, I'm still surprised by my reaction. Up until last Wednesday, I wasn't much of a Twi-hard (in the battle of Team Edward vs. Team Jacob, I was firmly on Team Michael Sheen), and as I headed into the screening, my expectations were about as low as the temperature of Forks in winter.
Granted, though I've never been a fan, I have enjoyed witnessing my friend Courtney and, of all people, my 28-year-old brother flip out over the franchise, and there have been times when I myself have enjoyed its OMG-worthy plotlines. I mean, who wouldn't want two hunky guys fighting for your heart, especially when they look like Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner?
My issues with 'Twilight' -- mainly, that it sends a regressive message to young women -- stem primarily from its source material. Of course, these are issues that the movies couldn't fix without uprooting the entire story, and by then, what's the point?
So in order to enjoy 'Eclipse,' I knew that I had to throw my pre-conceived notions out the window and accept 'Twilight' for what it was. And what do you know? It worked. Seconds into 'Eclipse,' I was already seeing 'Twilight' in the a new light, and by the time it was over, I was ready to declare it one of the most enjoyable films of the year. I say this as someone who loves Woody Allen, Stanley Kubrick and Ingmar Bergman films.
So what makes 'Eclipse' so much better than its predecessors? For starters, there's a lot more going on here than the usual Team Edward vs. Team Jacob drama -- enough for the non-Twi-hards out there to keep from glancing at the exit signs. Yes, Bella, Edward and Jacob are still brooding and sulking over Bella's Choice from 'New Moon,' but there are bigger threats at play here -- in this case, the Newborn Vampire Army, which has been terrorizing the state of Washington and is quickly on its way to find Bella and the Cullens in Forks.
What results is a dark and at times terrifying 'Twilight,' in which limbs are ripped off, heads are shattered and nobody is safe. For a franchise previously known for its sparkling vampires, CGI werewolves and tween drama, you get the sense that the movies are finally starting to grow up.
Such is also true in the case of Bella, Edward and Jacob, who, on the heels of their high school graduation, are being forced to make grown-up decisions of their own. With the Newborn Vampire Army approaching and multiple lives at stake, Bella sees two different paths: one with Edward and one with Jacob. Should she pick Jacob and thus stop the vampire war from happening, or should she follow her heart and go down the more dangerous, potentially deadly, path with Edward? 'Eclipse' makes a legitimate case for both.
Though, I have to say, at the risk of offending every Twi-hard on the Internet, I will never understand why -- spoiler alert -- Bella picked Edward over Jacob. I say this more as a credit to the quality of 'Eclipse' and the performance by Taylor Lautner than as a knock to the franchise.
When we were first introduced to Jacob in 'New Moon,' he was simply that other guy with the really, really hot body who lived in the woods and occasionally turned into a werewolf. But in 'Eclipse,' he's on a much more even playing field with Edward, and in his quest to win back Bella's heart, he comes off as arguably the most rational and level-headed person in Forks; even Edward thinks that Bella should be with Jacob.
And why not? He's basically offering Bella the best of both worlds -- a chance to love and be loved, and to keep living life as a normal human being. At the end of the movie, ask yourself: Is all that vampire drama really worth it? I'd say no, but maybe that's why I'm still single, and probably why I was never much of a 'Twilight' fan to begin with. (But admit it: That Jacob-Bella kiss was pretty hot.)
Putting all of that aside, as much as I hate to admit it, I enjoyed 'Eclipse,' and I'm actually excited to find out what happens in 'Breaking Dawn,' especially now that Oscar-winning writer-director Bill Condon ('Gods and Monsters,' 'Kinsey') is on board. I probably won't freak out when the trailer comes out, but it's still something to look forward to. And in an otherwise dismal summer movie season, what's not to love?
(Oh, and for the record: In case you already didn't guess it by now, I'm totally Team Jacob.)
Bella's Beauty Secrets
Allure.Com: Twi-hards young and old are being sent into a fang-filled frenzy today as The Twilight Saga: Eclipse opens today. But before you scoff at us for running yet another post on the movie and its stars, let us mention that we scored the only interview with Robin Mathewsthe woman behind Bella Swan's makeup in the movie. Here's her look, broken down feature by feature:
Skin. Keep it on the warmer side with a subtle glow. "Kristen's character had to stand out against all the pale vampires, so I used warm tones on her facenothing blue-based," Mathews explains. "And because her skin is so fair, I applied a foundation that was half a shade warmer. Her character is also happier in Eclipse, so I dusted her whole face with Giorgio Armani Beauty Micro-Fil Loose Powder because it has a tinge of shimmer."
Brows. "For Kristen's role in The Runaways, we had tweezed away the majority of her eyebrows to match Joan Jett's. For Eclipse, I bought human hair extensions, cut them into teeny brow-length hairs, and attached them with tweezers and prosthetic glue every morning."
Eyes. Focus on the lashes with a few coats of mascara. Mathews started off curling Kristen's lashes and then applied Make Up For Ever Smoky Lash Mascara which added a "significant punch to her eyes."
Lips. "Bella would never wear lipstick or gloss, so what I put on her doesn't have any shine, and it's only a shade or two darker than her actual lip color." (We suggest trying a hydrating lip stain like Tarte's LipSurgence Natural Lip Stain.)
Hollywood News: Twilight Eclipse eclipses New Moon as largest midnight opener in history
By Kim Palacios
HollywoodNews.com: We knew the premiere would be bigbut actual results surpassed projections when The Twilight Saga: Eclipse grossed more than $30 million in midnight sales, making it the largest midnight opener in history. Fans from across the country have become accustomed to 12:01 AM showings of the newest Twilight films, which are released at the earliest hour possible on the advertised date of release. Results for Eclipse bested the previous leader, The Twilight Saga: New Moon.
The film opened in upwards of 4,400 theaters across North America and, by Friday, that number will rise. Add in a healthy second wave of fans who will see it in the coming days, and it will certainly top next weeks box office charts.
One key to the films success will be the propensity of die-hard fans to see the movie multiple times in the early days of releasethe next several days will find a mixture of first-time viewers who could not make time for a mid-week midnight showing into busy schedules, second-and third-timers, and movie-lovers wanting to see whatevers hot on a holiday weekend.
So, whats in store for Breaking Dawn? It may be too early to tell. The films have not even begun shooting yet and by the November 2011 release of the fourth of five films, the franchise may have lost momentum. It is also unlikely that anyone on the planet has yet to hear of or read the Twilight books, which means the growth of the fan base with each film is now in deceleration mode.

True Blood
Team Jacob or Team Edward? It doesnt matter where you are, if youre a Twilight fan, you mustve been asking yourself that question. Its weird for me that a fan can tell I dont support that character though hes inseparable from the story saying Robert Pattinson. I think its because that all the fans identifying with Bella, and she must choose between Edward and Jacob Throughout the series. But it definitely wont cause me any kind of rivalry with Taylor.
Rob and I are good friends, not only is he a nice guy, hes too nice! adds Taylor Lautner and laughs. He needs to be really hard with me, so that we can shoot a scene in which I supposed to hit him.
Yes. You read right. Rob Pattinson Kristen stewart and taylor lautner who became thanks to Twilight saga to the hottest stars in the industry, found time in their busy schedule to interview exclusively to Rosh 1.
Like a family
Youre good friends the three of you?
Taylor:were a group of 30 people who worked together on three movies. Were like family, really close. Im certainly not waiting to the day when the shooting of the last movies will end, but Im sure well keep in touch. Were with each other a lot on set, hanging out together, going together to the gym..
Rob (laughs):not me, Im lazy! I havent gone to the gym with you. Edward was supposed to be a muscular character, but in the end hes not
The lives of Rob (24), Kristen (20) and Taylor (18) have changed radically since Twilight so much, that sometime even they have a hard time to get used to their new status as superstars who are starring in every magazine and serve as a role model to hundreds of thousands of boys and girls around the world. Things had changed so much Kristen tries to analyze. Fame is something thats certainly in a high place in the list of things people want to have, especially in America. We didnt expect that the first movie will success like it had, and we were very excited when it had, because we could share the success with so much people. Meanwhile sometimes there is a not so good feeling, when people try to make business on our back, and we know its not because they love us. Its just business. Our life had really changed, I dont know from where to start adds Taylor. I think Twilight had given me an option to do what I love to make movies and work with new and talented people. The last 2 years had been the best of my life.
Are you reading what is being written on you in newspapers?
Rob: Im reading gossip only before Im doing an interview. If I know that I need to answer questions, Im trying to be ready. Usually Im not doing an interview if Im not promoting a movie, and because people hardly seeing me in public, you could say that most of what is written about me is an invention
Kristen: we need to protect our privacy. People yearn to know every little thing about us, but its important not to let them everything and leave something private for ourselves. Its certainly a change because Ive never had to protect this privacy, until now
Always after the sun
In Eclipse we continue to discover new things about Bella the human, Edward the cold vampire and Jacob the hot werewolf. I think Its not a romantic triangle at all Kristen explains. The relationship of Bella and Jacob is a one-sided on Jacobs side, cause Bella never takes Jacob as an option until she kisses him. When she goes back to Edward, its really changes their relationship cause that her attitude is now I can be with someone else. She never thought she could be with someone else apart from Edward
Robert, do you think that Edward understands that Bella dont want to be with anyone other than him?
Look, Edwards anti-hero. Hes weird because from the one hand hes a very strong creature and he has a lot of power, but he never used this power, and had never done anything for anyone except from Bella, even though he has went around in the world more than 100 years. He maintains modesty because he didnt want anybody to know he was different and hates himself so much
You and Kristen know each other so well. How is your work on set?
One of the things I really love in Kristen is because shes a good actress, she brings good things out of me.On the other hand she has something to say about everything I do, it can annoy sometimes (laughs).
There were some times, when we finished shooting a scene and she said lets do this again and it meant that she thought that I wasnt good enough. If I wouldve done that to her, she would have killed me
The race for the billion
Some important websites already marked Eclipse as the movie who will success to bring the most people to the cinema in the summer, and not only because of the adored trio, but because of its increasing popularity. And some are willing to bet that the grosses of the third movie of the saga will be more than a billion dollars!
Spoiler to the ones who hadnt read the books:
I think that part of the fact that the saga was so successful, is related to the ability to stretch the moment before the first time of Bella and Edward together Rob tries to explain It lasted throughout two long books, and I think people like to live with the characters and experience the fear, excitement and passion of sex for the first time (end of spoiler)
Twilight is focused on teenagers in the age of high school. How you were in high school?
Rob: I was a boring student
You are laughing all the time youre together. It was like that on set?
Rob: Eclipses shots were actually very stress. I think we like this only when were doing an interview to promote the films. I dont understand actors who think that in promoting interviews, they must be really serious. Especially now when we in the third film, we have nothing to say (laughs).
